Don't lose the romance of actually going out to the theatre. Leave your Wi-Fi behind and head to downtown Baton Rouge. Each month, the Manship Theatre offers a slate of new-release documentaries. Here's what's in store for June:
July 8–9: All I Can Say: A Documentary about Blind Melon’s Shannon Hoon: Raw autobiographical video footage reveals Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon's life as an addict from 1990 until his death in 1995. This documentary assesses the band's ascent in popularity against the backdrop of Hoon's struggles, shedding light on the sacrifices that come with achieving success and fame. 7 pm on both nights.
June 11: The Goonies: A group of young misfits called The Goonies discover an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate's long-lost treasure. 2 pm and 7 pm.
June 12 & 16: Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things: Ella Fitzgerald was a 15 year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Within months she was a star. Ella follows her extraordinary journey over six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy. 2 pm on July 12; 7 pm on July 16.
July 17 & 19: Relic (Presented by IFC Midnight): Relic tells the story of Edna, an elderly and widowed matriarch who goes missing, her daughter Kay, and granddaughter Sam, who must travel to their remote family home to find her. Soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna. 7:30 pm on July 17. 2 pm on July 19.
July 18: Purple Rain: A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise. 2 pm and 7 pm.
August 1: Pee Wee's Big Adventure: When eccentric man-child Pee-wee Herman gets his beloved bike stolen in broad daylight, he sets out across the U.S. on the adventure of his life. 2 pm and 7 pm.
