Leave the X-Men to the megaplex. Each month, the Manship Theatre offers a slate of films, from modern classics to engaging new documentaries. Here's what's in store for July:
July 7: Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché (2018): A tribute to and investigation of the remarkable achievements of female director Alice Guy-Blaché during the early 20th century, and the story of how her legacy—over 1,000 films—faded from memory. Directed by Pamela B. Green. 2 pm. $9.50.
July 12: Young French Cinema Short Films Block: The Young French Cinema program, presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and UniFrance, showcases rising French talent with a global vision. These filmmakers explore wide-ranging cultural influences and subject matters, and many of their works were chosen to premiere in top international festivals last year. Films include: Kapitalistis (Kapitalistis) directed by Pablo Munoz Gomez; Pauline Enslaved (Pauline Asservie, directed by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet; La Persistente (La Persistente), directed by Camille Lugan; The Villa (Les Gracieuses), directed by Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud. 7:30 pm. $6.50.
July 13: Pierrot le Fou (1965) DCP Restoration : Adultery pays a price, and in this film, it turns you into a criminal of the French countryside. 7:30 pm. $9.50.
July 21: Wonders of the Sea (2017) : The groundbreaking French oceanographic explorer, environmentalist, educator, and film producer Jean-Michel Cousteau's film details his and his children's oceanic explorations from Fiji to the Bahamas. 2 pm. $9.50.
July 28: Pavarotti (2019): Filmaker Ron Howard presents an intimate portrait documentary of the famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, featuring never-before-seen footage, concert performances, and interviews. 2 pm. $9.50.
