July at State Parks
to
Statewide Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Each month the good folks at Louisiana State Parks send us a listing of information for all the programs taking place at park properties during the month to come. The July calendar ranges from Dutch oven-cooking demonstrations (keep that heat contained!) to guided birdwatching hikes, to primitive woodworking, quilt workshops, and living-history sessions. So don't spend this time of year indoors; visit the wide open spaces cared for by the State Parks system. Here is a small sampling of adventures on offer.
• July 5, Evening Hike, Bogue Chitto State Park, Franklinton: Experience and learn about the sights and sounds of the evening on this ranger-led hike through the park. Join the interpretive ranger for a leisurely evening hike. Attendees are encouraged to bring insect repellent, a flashlight and water for the hike. 7:30 pm. (985) 839-5707.
• July 6, The Plantation Apothecary, Audubon State Historic Site, St. Francisville: Explore the world of medicine in the early nineteenth century. Visitors will be introduced to Lucretia Pierre of Oakley Plantation who learned the skills of an apothecary at the Ursuline Convent in New Orleans. The program includes demonstration on how many of the treatments were made. Noon–3 pm. (225) 635-3739.
• July 13, Latanier Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration, Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville: Join Latanier Cookers for a variety of Dutch oven side dishes and desserts.
