The Manship may be tentatively opening its doors for special screenings this summer, but it's virtual theatre is still full of possibilities! All ticket purchases help fund the Manship Theatre in downtown Baton Rouge. Check out these titles below:
May 22–June 11: The Ghost of Pepper Sellers: In 1973 Peter Sellers, one of the biggest comedy actors at the time, embarked on a pirate comedy for Columbia Pictures. He lost confidence with the film immediately and tried to sabotage it, firing the producers before turning on his friend (and the film's young director), Peter Medak. Despite an illustrious career and the passing of forty-three years since the unraveling of the production, Medak is still reeling from the disastrous experience and healing from the wounds inflicted by Peter Sellers and the film’s failure. $10 for a two-day rental pass with code "MANSHIP."
May 26–June 14: The Painter and the Thief: The Manship Theatre has partnered with Academy Award-winning studio NEON to present The Painter and the Thief, wherein an artist befriends the thief who stole her paintings. She becomes his closest ally when he is severely hurt in a car crash and needs full time care, even if her paintings are not found. But then the tables turn. $4 for a three-day rental pass.
May 28–June 14: Deerskin, "Le Daim": In this black comedy of middle-aged masculinity gone awry, Academy Award winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist) is a recent divorcee who becomes obsessed with a vintage fringed deerskin jacket that begins to exert an uncanny hold on him. Set in a sleepy French alpine village, he falls into the guise of an independent filmmaker and befriends a trusting bartender and aspiring editor (Adèle Haenel, Portrait of a Lady on Fire) who becomes his collaborator on a movie that will document a surprising new goal he sets himself. French with English subtitles. $10 for a three-day pass.
Starting June 5: Shirley: Renowned horror writer Shirley Jackson is on the precipice of writing her masterpiece when the arrival of newlyweds upends her meticulous routine and heightens tensions in her already tempestuous relationship with her philandering husband. The middle-aged couple, prone to ruthless barbs and copious afternoon cocktails, begins to toy mercilessly with the naïve young couple at their door. $5.99 for a three-day rental pass.
