Leyla McCalla Quartet
F. G. Bulber Auditorium 4205 Ryan Street, Lake Charles, Louisiana
Blending her own heritage and cultural experiences as a person of Haitian descent who grew up in New York City and lived in Ghana, Leyla McCalla found a certain synchrony in the cultural gumbo pot that is New Orleans, where her music found connections in her own Haitian Creole roots, combined with the classical sounds of the cello and of chamber music. Today, her music is a joyful blend of traditional Creole, Cajun, and Haitian music, as well as American jazz and folk. You might catch her playing the cello, or the tenor banjo, or the guitar. Enjoy sounds both contemporary and inherited with her special performance at the F.G. Bulber Auditorium at McNeese University this evening. 7 pm. $20; $5 for children younger than 5. banners.org.
