New Orleans sculptor Lin Emery
Internationally-recognized sculptor Lin Emery began sculpting at age twenty-one under Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine while living in Paris. After she returned to her birth city of New York, she learned to weld and cast bronze before she moved to New Orleans, where she made oyster tongs before beginning to create kinetic sculptures in 1954. Emery's work was heavily influenced by nature—she aimed to recreate the organic, fluid movements of the natural world in her works.
In 2008, Emery commissioned composer Jay Weigel to write a song about her life. Emery, who passed away on March 11, 2021 at age ninety-four, requested that this composition—titled "The Light is On"—be played at her memorial concert, which will be hosted by the Arthur Roger Gallery at the New Orleans Museum of Art. In addition to Emery's commissioned composition, the program will include three other songs conducted by Chelsea Gallo and performed by members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. There will be opening remarks by Director of the New Orleans Museum of Art Susan Taylor, Jay Weigel, and Emery’s son Brooks Braselman. Reception 4 pm–5 pm, concert to follow from 5 pm–6 pm.
