Louisiana Artists for Puerto Rico
Baton Rouge Gallery 1442 City Park Ave, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808
Artists aren't typically inclined to math, but they have a knack for aftermath, emerging with works both healing and buoyant in the wake of disasters. For the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria's devastation in Puerto Rico, the Baton Rouge Gallery hosts "Louisiana Artists for Puerto Rico," an evening of music, poetry, and dance led by area poet and media professional Leslie D. Rose, whose Puerto Rican descent prompted, in part, her effort to contribute to the country's reconstruction. "As Louisianans, we understand how long recovery actually takes," said Rose, "and we know that the island of Puerto Rico has many years of restoration to come. As artists, we are passionate people who have the superpower of empathy. Through this initiative, we are mixing our artistic passion and lived experiences to continually uplift and support our island family."
The evening features poets Brittany Marshall and Justin Lamb, Acadiana dance troupe Kabuki Dancers, musical theatre actor Roger Ferrier, musician Peter Simon, and a Caribbean nightlife soundtrack courtesy of DJ Automatik. Rose hosts along with her husband Donney (both poets, they'll also perform on the bill). 7 pm–10 pm. Proceeds support island agency El Departamento de la Comida’s mission to rebuild 200 farms on Puerto Rico in 24 months, through earmarked funds donated to Americas for Conservation and the Arts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Boulder, Colo. $10–$20. facebook.com/laartistsforpr.
