Sandro Miller
John Malkovich as Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother"
John Malkovich as John Lennon from Annie Leibovitz's iconic Rolling Stone cover, naked and smooching Yoko Ono. John Malkovich as Florence Owens Thompson, the subject of Dorothea Lange's famous Great Depression photo, "Migrant Mother." As Marilyn from Andy Warhol's diptych.
In Sandro Miller's remarkable and groundbreaking collection, Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to Photographic Masters, he's created 61 recreations of iconic photos that have influenced him as a photographer. In collaboration with actor John Malkovich, Miller painstakingly researched each original—studying clothing, sets of film, camera types, lighting secrets (decoded by extreme close ups of the subjects' eyeballs!), and more. The collection, then, exists simultaneously as a fascinating commemoration of the art of photography's highest points as well as a display of virtuosity and range for both Miller and Malkovich in their respective talents.
This exhibition at Mac-Gryder is the first occasion that the collection, in its entirety, has been shown in North America. On view from October 5, 2019–January 1, 2020, with an artist's reception on October 5 in conjunction with Art for Art's Sake. macgrydergallery.com.
