Mask-Making Martinique Style Workshop Retreat
to
NUNU Arts and Culture Collective 1510 Courtableau Highway, Arnaudville, Louisiana 70512
Join traditional Carnival mask-makers Jean-Luc and Vanessa Guy-Toussaint for a four day workshop exploring mask-making techniques from Martinique, as well as those in Acadiana and other parts of the world. The program kicks off Friday at 6 pm, with a conversation table and orientation, which will transition over the course of the weekend into practices of modeling, constructing, and painting of masks. Each participant will be encouraged to create a mask that celebrates their "true identity". All materials will be provided and sourced with sustainability in mind, utilizing recycled and natural substances, and students will have access to sewing machines, a laser cutter, 3D printer, and more. What's more, the workshop will be sprinkled with the use of French and Creole languages. $150 for NUNU Members; $300 for non-members, who will be invited to become a NUNU member (for $25 annually)—includes dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Once completed, participants will be encouraged to participate in Mardi Gras courirs and parades throughout Acadiana and Louisiana, celebrating their individual identities in a see of anonymity. Afterwards, participants are invited to return their used masks to Arnaudville and place them on display at the Saint Luc French Immersion and Cultural Campus during March, Le Mois de la Francophonie.
