A brace of charming concerts at the Historic New Orleans Collection mid-month:
June 12: “A Tricentennial Salute,” a piano recital by acclaimed pianist and University of Missouri professor emeritus Peter Collins, will feature works by four 19th-century New Orleans-born composers—Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Basile Barès, Emil Richard and Edouard Déjan. After relocating to Paris in 1841, Gottschalk captivated Europe with Creole folk melodies and Caribbean rhythms. Not only a representative of New Orleans, he is considered the first American composer and pianist to achieve international acclaim, dazzling audiences throughout Europe, the United States and South America. The other featured composers remained in New Orleans and enjoyed substantial careers in the city’s well-established musical community. $20, $15 members. 6 pm.
June 18: In collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC, and the Consulate of Sweden in New Orleans, THNOC will present a recital featuring the repertoire of Jenny Lind, the Swedish opera singer who was an international star in the 19th century. Featuring soprano Kine Sandtrø and pianist Julia Sjöstedt, the program will feature arias from the opera canon as well as Nordic folk music. Free, with registration required. 6 pm.
