Donald Martiny
A little over a decade ago, Donald Martiny was working in his studio, starting a new painting. He painted the first brushstroke on the canvas, then stepped back to anticipate the next move. "It suddenly struck me that any other brushwork would only diminish the power and integrity of that original gesture," he told White Hot Magazine in an interview earlier this year. "It felt to me that any additional marks I might make would only be in reaction to the edge of the canvas or simply filling in the negative areas."
His works, massive, almost sculptural renderings of that first mark on canvas, manage to balance complexity with their reactionalism, calculation in their randomness.
See his most recent works on display at the Martine Chaisson Gallery, with an opening reception on August 3 in conjunction with White Linen Night.
