Maison Freetown 800 E Vermilion St., Lafayette, Louisiana 70501
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion were instrumental in America's fight in WWII, operating under the motto “no mail, low morale” and proving that women had a crucial role in serving our military despite facing discrimination and other barriers. The True Friends Society of Lafayette have partnered with Maison Freetown African American History Museum on a new exhibition honoring the remarkable women. An opening reception on June 3 at 2 pm will feature Lafayette's own hero, Major Fannie Griffin McClendon—who at 102 once served as a member of the Battalion. maisonfreetown.org.
