Preserving New Orleans' Second Line Culture
to
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Gallery 1205 Rampart Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70116
The history of New Orleans second lines and social aid and pleasure clubs is directly linked to traditions of African American cultural practices including brass bands, jazz funerals and African dances that date back more than two centuries, to Sunday celebrations in Congo Square. The exhibition Preserving New Orleans Second Line Culture aims to bring a greater understanding of the importance of these cultural traditions. The second line of 2016 is being preserved by contemporary New Orleans photographers Judy Cooper, Brad Edelman, L. J. Goldstein, Charles M. Lovell, M.J. Mastagiovanni, Jerry Moran, and Leslie Parr. More than thirty of their original photographs will provide a more thorough understanding of the meaning of New Orleans second lines, social aid and pleasure clubs, and the communities from which they emerged. All welcome at an opening reception, 6 pm–9 pm on Saturday, November 12. jazzandheritage.org.
