River City Jazz Masters: Eric Alexander Quartet
Manship Theatre 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
On the piano at age six, the clarinet at nine, alto sax at twelve, and finally, the tenor sax during his time at the University of Indiana, Eric Alexander has been speaking the language of music from the beginning. Influenced by cats like Monk, Dizzy, Sonny Stitt, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, George Coleman, Coltrane, Bird, and bebop, Alexander has made a name for himself as the number two behind Joshua Redman at the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, within South Side Chicago organ trios, and over eighty jazz album appearances. Alexander and his quartet will bring his warm and robust tones to the Manship tonight as part of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge's River City Jazz Masters Concert Series. 7:30 pm. $28–$48. artsbr.org/river-city-jazz-masters.
