River Road Slave Burial Grounds Documentary Screening
River Parishes Community College 925 W Edenborne Parkway, Gonzales, Louisiana 70737
In a 2013 survey of its property in Ascension Parish, Shell Oil Company made a remarkable discovery: over one thousand unmarked graves. Further research revealed that the sites were the burial places for slaves of the Monroe Plantation and Bruslie Plantations of the nineteenth century.
In 2017, the River Road African American Museum partnered with members of the descendant community and Shell to create the River Road Slave Burial Grounds Coalition to preserve, protect, and acknowledge these slave cemeteries, which hold cultural significance for Louisiana and the United States.
River Road Slave Burial Grounds tells the story of this initiative and honors the lives of the slaves who were buried there. Screenings will take place at the following locations throughout Black History Month. For more information, contact melanie@aamuseum.org.
