Saturday Science and the MARS Truck
Main Library at Goodwood 7711 Goodwood Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70806
Two hundred and fifty years after Benjamin Franklin went a-kite flyin', electricity is still largely a mystery, even to the most advanced scientists. Join Dr. Michael L. Cherry at the Main Library for a discussion this Saturday on the rare, but very intense Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes (TGFs) of high energy radiation from lightning, and the LSU experiments to study them. Afterwards, guests can explore a series of interactive exhibits with the LSU Physics & Astronomy Department's Mobile Astronomy Resource System truck (MARS). Members from the department will demonstrate scientific concepts such as Static Electricity via the Van de Graaff generator, a spinning chair with props to display Angular Momentum and Rotational Inertia, an apparatus to show Faraday's Law of Induction, two 10" Meade computer controlled telescopes, and more. For all ages. Lecture begins at 1 pm, MARS truck demos at 2:30 pm. Free. ebrpl.org.
