Stickball Clinic with the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe
Tunica-Biloxi Reservation 150 Melancon Road, Marksville, Louisiana 71350
Invoke your inner warrior with the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe's fourth annual Stickball Clinic—drawing on ancestral tests of strength and sport and sharpening your survival skills. The ancient team sport, believed to be one of the oldest in North America, was a favorite among Southeastern Indian tribes and is still active in Choctaw communities of Mississippi, Coushatta in Louisiana, and the Alabama-Coushatta of Texas.
The Stickball Clinic and Exhibition, hosted by the Tunica-Biloxi Language & Culture Revitalization Program (LCRP), is an opportunity for the public to explore traditions of the region's indigenous communities. Participants will learn the game's rules, safety regulations, and basic skills. The clinic will be followed by an exhibition game played by the Alabama-Coushatta team and scrimmage games for workshop participants. Guests will be treated to a cookout after the events, hosted by the LCRP. 9 am–1 pm at the Chief Joseph A. Pierite Pow Wow Grounds. Open to children ages 10–16; must be accompanied by a parent. $10; free to Tunica-Biloxi tribal children. Pre-registration required; contact John Barbry at jdbarbry@tunica.org or (800) 272-9767. The public is also invited to view the exhibition game free of charge.
