Dennis Paul Williams
Born and raised in St. Martin Parish, Dennis Paul Williams' art is recognized for its intrinsic spirituality and nature. Along with colors and oils and media and texture, Williams cites prayer as an essential element to each painting, a ritual he carefully enacts during the process of creation.
When he first entered the Teche Center for the Arts' theater gallery last spring to consider displaying his work there, he announced, "Nine. That's what we'll name the show." He says the number has spiritual significance across several faiths and cultures. Novenas, nine knots in a traiteur's treatment.
The exhibit, on display from April 19 through the summer, is called The Divine Nine, and features nine of Williams' most recent paintings, plus one extra in the entryway. Lagniappe. A selection from Williams' extensive sketch books will also be on display, featuring drawings, poems, and notes.
Viewers of the exhibit will be invited to help name one thus-untitled painting in the show, and the artist will select a winner to be announced later this summer.
