December 8, 1941—the day after the Pearl Harbor attacks—is a day best remembered as the moment the United States officially entered World War II. However, Louisiana was a few steps ahead when it came to preparing for its country's defense in the coming war. From 1940–1945, the state hosted the largest maneuvers in U.S. military history, witnessed massive changes to its industrial base, and saw its citizens become enthusiastic contributors to the war efforts.
In the traveling exhibit held currently at the Nicholls University, Louisiana's specific contributions to the American efforts of World War II will be highlighted through artifacts, photographs, and oral histories. Produced by the National WWII Museum, The Pelican State Goes to War: Louisiana in World War II will include the courageous stories of the 280,000 Louisiana residents who served on the battlefield, as well as poignant presentations of the contributions at the home front.
The exhibition will open November 1, and will remain on display through December 15. It is located on the first floor of the Nicholls Archives. Free. nicholls.edu.
