Urban Bush Women: Hair and Other Stories
Contemporary Arts Center 900 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130
Dance is both the message and the medium for Urban Bush Women (UBW), the dance company founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. UBW moves beyond the bounds of a one-stage performance to artistic leadership development, community involvement, and innovative choreography—all with the goal of shining a light on untold and under-told stories of disenfranchised people and righting the balance of power in the dance world.
In collaboration with Junebug Productions and Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans, UBW will stage an alternative version of Hair and Other Stories at the CAC this month, using the entire building as the setting for an evening-length performance of stories on race, gender identity, and economic inequality sourced from New Orleans and connected by the thread of African American women's hair. 7:30 pm on Wednesday–Saturday; 3 pm Sunday. $35. cacno.org.
