Vitus Shell, "Bottom Line," 2022.
Louisiana mixed-media painter Vitus Shell explores contemporary figure painting in a new solo exhibition at Ibis Contemporary Art Gallery titled Gold Standard. In these works, Shell looks at the value societies have placed on gold as a substance throughout history; juxtaposed with the ways Black lives and experiences have been commodified. Ornate gold frames are a reference to official portraits of royals and other aristocratic figures of the past, providing new context to indicate the resilience and beauty of Black strength. ibisartgallery.com.
