The first leprosarium in the United States was located in Carville, Louisiana, open from 1894 to 1999. Now, a museum operates on the site, the National Hansen's Disease Museum, which collects and interprets the medical and cultural artifacts of the leprosarium and its grounds, designated the Carville Historic District in 1992. A tour of the district will be offered today between 4 pm and 5 pm, with a 15-person limit (ability to climb stairs is a must). Call (225) 642-1950 to reserve a spot.
