Zarouhie Abdalian: Production
to
Contemporary Arts Center 900 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130
After presentations at the Berkeley Museum of Art, LAXART, and the Whitney Biennial, Zarouhie Abdalian returns to her hometown with a solo exhibition. Through sound, sculpture, and site-specific installation, Abdalian presents a body of work that deals with the historical and subjective condition of human labor. Mounting a critical response to the art historical development of the readymade, Abdalian foregrounds in found objects the traces of their production, use, and circulation within society. The exhibition will include existing works as well as newly commissioned pieces and a daily feature-length film series curated by Zarouhie Abdalian and including films by Allan Sekula, Flora M’mbugu-Schelling, Harun Farocki, Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, Kevin Jerome Everson, Loreley Unamuno, & Malena Bystrowicz.
Don't miss: November 8: Special Panel Discussion. As part of this exhibition, there will be a special panel discussion during the CAC Second Thursday, 6 pm-9 pm.
Performance evening: January 10: Zarouhie Abdalian and Joseph Rosensweig direct a Second Thursdays event. Part musical theater, part chamber music—the performance, including 12 instrumentalists playing both traditional and ‘created’ instruments, will build towards the presentation of American composer Frederic Rzewski’s “The Price of Oil,” which made its premiere in Amsterdam in 1980. 6 pm–9 pm. cacno.org.
