Summertime is fig time
Some locals look forward to summer produce like blueberries or tomatoes, but for me, summertime is fig time. I just love 'em. Delicious, nutritious, beautiful inside and out, and I could be wrong about this, but how many other fruits can boast being mentioned in the Bible time and time again? The ancient fruit has been on my mind since reading Ed and Leon's June article. (Have I told you all how easily I could be convinced to sell all my belongings and just sit at the feet of the Lawnchair Gardeners? It's true... Ed and Leon forever. And especially after reading this.)
Anyway, one of the few things that my husband has blacklisted from our backyard is a fig tree. I'm sure he's told me why, but I've deleted such silly talk from my memory and am left fig-less and frustrated. Well it is with a smidge of shame that I confess to you all that we recently found a fig tree in a neighborhood (not our own!) and made off with as many ripe figs as we could carry. I promise that the tree stands on common, public ground, but I still feel like we stole those figs. Did we?
When we discovered the fig tree and saw how heavy its branches were, we did what any decent hungry person would do. We relieved that tree of its burden and had figs at every meal for two days. On our next fig gathering expedition, which will probably be in a couple of days, I just might try this fig marmalade recipe that I rediscovered in the archives. Any other suggestions for fig consumption?
