Dinosaurs are a big deal—literally! Jason, the affectionate nickname for the massive Triceratops skull who greets visitors to the Louisiana Art & Science Museum, weighs in at nearly a ton and spans over five feet. He's a fitting specimen to preside over Dino Day, one of the museum's biggest days of the year. Dino-lovers of all ages will flock to LASM on June 16 to dig up all manner of learning and fun around these prehistoric rulers.
Dinosaurs may not have technically existed for millions of years, but that hasn't stopped their power to fascinate. From Land of the Lost to Jurassic Park to The Last Dinosaur, these now-extinct giants and the fossils they've left behind capture the imaginations of generation after generation. Luckily, the Art & Science Museum recognizes that dino fever isn't something that's cured by age.
“It's a great time for kids, but it’s absolutely engaging and fun for all ages,” says Nick BeJeaux, the Museum's Audience Engagement & Public Relations Manager. “This is the kind of event that multigenerational families can come together for and have a wonderful time; it’s a great way to kickoff summer vacation.”
The day features tons of hands-on activities for children to dig into their natural curiosity (who doesn't want to learn to identify their favorite dino species or uncover a mock fossil?), as well as informational booths where inquiring minds can flesh out the bare bones of their dinosaur knowledge. The planetarium will host a lineup of dino-centric films on an appropriately huge screen in its theater, culminating with the beloved animated classic The Land Before Time.
Dino day runs from 10 am to 2 pm at the museum, but you don't have to worry about paying saurian-sized prices to get in on the action—activities are included with regular admission. Not ready to leave all the dinosaur fun in the past just yet? Swing by the museum shop on your way out to snag some books, toys, and other educational goodies.
