Those who grew up with Cajun grandparents recall tales of the Fifolet—a mystical, fabled entity that manifests as a bluish orb of light and dwells deep in the swamps, luring travelers to treasure. Andre Chapoy finds this mysterious folklore the perfect concept to explain his brand new Baton Rouge convention, FifoCon: “Follow the Fifolet to Baton Rouge, and you’re going to find something that appeals to you,” said Chapoy. “You’re going to find your hidden treasure.” And upon reviewing all there is to see, do, and experience in downtown Baton Rouge during the weekend of FifoCon and the coinciding Fifolet Halloween Festival, it’s doubtless that a plethora of treasures awaits.
The first FifoCon, running from October 26—29, is already shaping up to be an impressively action-packed and comprehensive event. Those interested in video games, cosplaying, comic books, tabletop games, animation, science fiction, sword fighting, or any realm in between will find something appealing. What sets FifoCon apart from many conventions, however, is that it is not just for hobbyists: it is also a professional networking opportunity for those working in the burgeoning industries as well as a showcase for students interested in pursuing educational programs or careers in digital media and other creative aspects of STEM.
If what you seek is taking your cosplay to the next level and sweeping the competition, exploring careers and educational opportunities in video game design, learning to play a new table top game, or catching a hilarious improv show, you will find that and more in Baton Rouge on Halloween weekend. The Fifolet may be enigmatic, but with all the events of FifoCon and the Fifolet Halloween Festival combined, following it is certain to earn you treasure—whether that be in the form of a new hobby, a career opportunity, or simply a good time is up to you.
Special thanks to Ken Decker Jr., owner of Composite Effects silicon mask company, who was the first significant sponsor for FifoCon, and without whom none of this would be possible.
