Extend your stay in Natchez by staying the night in a historic bed and breakfast in the Cottage at Stone House. Enjoy luxury accommodations in Natchez’s downtown historic district, dine on a full Southern breakfast in the Stone House dining room, and listen to a “Soirée Musicale” by owner and classical concert pianist, Joe Stone.
“The Stone House has a unique history,” said Stone. “It was originally part of The Elms, which is across the street. David Stanton (whose brother constructed the world-famous Stanton Hall in Natchez) bought the Elms at the end of the 1840s. He built a stand-alone billiard hall in the style of a Greek temple around 1850 and then later enlarged it into a house for his two sons in the 1860s.”
The Billiard Hall, which served as the Stanton family’s private social gathering place, remains in the Stone House and features a Renaissance Revival rosewood and mahogany billiard table that dates from 1885. Joseph Newman Stone and his wife Theodora Britton bought the house in 1877, and it has remained in the Stone family for over 145 years. Today the Stone House is owned by their great-grandson, who lives in the main house and operates it as a musical tour venue and gallery while managing the bed and breakfast cottage behind it.

Stone, who offers piano concerts to guests staying in the cottage, holds degrees from Eastman and Manhattan music conservatories, where he studied clarinet and piano. After working as a professional clarinetist in New York for over 20 years, Stone has played only piano since 1997 and has appeared as pianist at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, MS, and at the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He began his piano concert series at Stone House in 2006, delighting groups from cruise and bus tours visiting Natchez.
The two-bedroom cottage bed and breakfast originally served as the kitchen for the main house. It features a private bath, a covered front porch providing access to a brick courtyard, and a sun deck on the side providing access to private, off-street parking. Guests are invited to shop next door at the Stone Gallery, which offers paintings, antique maps, prints, books, and other art for sale. The house has won the Historic Natchez Foundation's Restoration Award as well as TripAdvisor's Travelers’ Choice Awards for the top 25 bed and breakfast inns in the
United States. Reservations can be made online or by emailing reservations@josephstonehouse.com.
