Falling for Fredericksburg

This autumn, head for the hills … to the Texas Hill Country, that is. Destination: Fredericksburg, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country

Fredericksburg, centrally located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, boasts a small-town feel with the restaurants, shops, places to stay and attractions usually reserved for a much larger destination.

Founded by German settlers in 1846, the town’s heritage is evident today in its charming historic Main Street, which offers 150 shops, art galleries, museums, bakeries and restaurants in a walkable setting.

Fredericksburg, known for decades as a premier shopping destination, offers the best of home decor, western wear, fine art, kitchen wares, linens, antiques and more. The town’s German heritage is also seen in its authentic 26-foot German Christmas Pyramid and 30-foot Christmas Tree, which are the highlights of the town’s holiday decorations.

The Heart of Texas Wine Country

Fredericksburg is also Texas Wine Country. With over 50 wineries and tasting rooms in the area, visitors can sample all the varietals that the Lone Star State offers, plus wines from around the world, on picturesque vineyards or in boutique tasting rooms.

The selection of lodging options in Fredericksburg includes 23 hotel and motels with over 1,100 rooms as well as nearly 1,500 unique bed & breakfasts, vacation rentals and guesthouses in the area. A dozen RV parks can also be found in town and throughout the countryside.

Great food and wonderful dining are a fixture, with more than 100 restaurants that feature everything from regional Texas Hill Country cuisine to authentic German, Tex-Mex and BBQ, as well as numerous fine dining restaurants.

Other attractions in the area include the National Museum of the Pacific War, Lyndon B. Johnson State and National Historical Parks and Luckenbach Texas, established in 1849 as a trading post and made internationally famous by country western performers Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Wildflower Season

The beauty of the Texas Hill Country is on full display each spring during wildflower season, but while the flowers are magnificent, don’t miss these other great things to do when planning a spring escape to Fredericksburg.

Besides Texas Wine Country, Fredericksburg offers several outdoor activities for all ages. Plan ahead and take a hike up or around Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Park passes frequently sell out during beautiful spring weather, so be sure to book early. If Enchanted Rock isn’t an option, check out other local favorites like nature trails at Wildseed Farms, the largest working wildflower farm in the U.S., Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park and Cross Mountain.

Plan your Texas Hill Country adventure for midweek and you will find these perks when visiting town Sunday through Thursday. Fredericksburg is a perfect change of scenery for those working from home.

Fredericksburg’s central location in Texas also makes it an ideal location to base a tour of the Texas Hill Country while staying in a charming small-town atmosphere.
