Downtown at Sundown

On Fridays, Lake Charles’ beloved "welcome to summer" concert series brings that T.G.I.F. spirit back to Ryan Street

by

Grab those dancing shoes and consider your dance cards filled on Fridays this May and June, as the much-anticipated concert series Downtown at Sundown returns to downtown Lake Charles. Returning for a 25th year, the concert series kicks of Lake Charles's summer season with a star-studded cluster of regional musicians showcasing South Louisiana musical genres—from swamp pop and Cajun to Zydeco and classic rock. Headlining the stage this year will be the Charlie Wayne Band, beloved locally for its energetic country and hard rock-influenced sounds, as well as Lafayette-based singer-songwriter Gino V, who recently branched out solo to form his own band.

Set against the historic backdrop of downtown Lake Charles, the festival brings thousands of music lovers flocking to the 1000 block of Ryan Street in front of historic City Hall and the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse. The event transforms Ryan Street into a thriving urban street fair lined with booths presented by popular area bars and eateries, table top galleries, local retail vendors, and various other diversions. As in past years, proceeds from beverage sales benefit the Literacy Council of SWLA and its mission to encourage lifelong learning.

Good Fun for a Great Cause

Championing the Lake Charles community remains an inherent part of Downtown at Sundown, and this year is no different. A highlight coming June 9 is the “Geaux Blue Friday” themed night, when Lake Charles residents gather to support the students and alumni of McNeese State University by inviting attendees to don their best blue attire … and why not throw on a cowboy hat to truly embrace the spirited affair while you’re at it?

This year’s concerts take place from 6 pm–9 pm on Fridays, May 19, May 26, June 2, and June 9. An announcement unveiling the full performer lineup is coming soon. The best accessories to bring along for the festivities? Think lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and sun hats. The folks at Downtown at Sundown supply the rest.
