Here’s a fun fact you might not have realized about Lake Charles, Louisiana: Did you know there are more festivals and events in the Lake Area than there are weeks in the year?

With an abundance of attractions –– multi-hued sunsets over scenic byways, culinary festivals highlighting the rich diversity of Louisiana cuisine, a vibrant downtown scene set against  lakeside views, and a live entertainment scene that celebrates the best of its Cajun heritage while welcoming a wide assortment of musical genres –– it’s no wonder Lake Charles ranks high on the list of Louisiana destinations to hit up in 2023. So here’s a rundown of some of the best events (sign up for info here!) this spirited lake-inspired city has to offer this year, and beyond.

Rum Revival (May 6): a tribute to the colorful history and intriguing ties between the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, this tropical-hued celebration revolves around various notable rums, and serves libations of every variety.

The Louisiana Pirate Festival (May 4–14): unique to Lake Charles, this lively multi-day festival is an homage to the legend of pirate Jean Lafitte, who was rumored to have buried treasure along the banks of the lake and surrounding waterways.

Chennault International Airshow (May 19–21): aerial maneuvers are on high-flying display at this airshow, which returns every second year to deliver high-octane aerobatics while shining a spotlight on the importance of STEM education.

Downtown at Sundown Concert Series (May 19–June 9): celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, this dazzling outdoor music series set in downtown Lake Charles features live performances from bands playing Louisiana styles ranging Cajun to Zydeco.

Holly Beach Crab Festival (June 9–11): set along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, this celebration of crabs includes crab bingo, crab racing, a cookoff (of what else, crabs!) and plenty of beach-friendly fun.

Louisiana Food & Wine Festival (September 14–17): an exciting addition to this year’s event lineup, the inaugural epicurean festival will serve as a showcase of Louisiana’s unparalleled culture, seafood and agriculture alongside celebrated winemakers, artisans, and guest chefs.

Chuck Fest (October 21): What started as a way to mark Luna Bar & Grill's 10th birthday has mushroomed into one of Lake Charles's largest free festivals. Chuck Fest is a day-long celebration of Southwest Louisiana's music, arts, and culinary scenes. Proceeds help local artists develop the tools they need to be successful in the business of visual, musical, and other arts.

Smoke & Barrel (November 18): A celebration of fine bourbon, barbecue, and whiskey, Smoke & Barrel presents more than 80 bourbons and whiskeys to taste alongside lip-smacking barbecue delivered straight from the flames of Southwest Louisiana's most celebrated pitmasters. It all unfolds beneath the stately oaks on the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse lawn.
