It’s a brand new world, this 2020th year, and in the name of resolutions, a proper wander around the capital city, with stops at all of its newest additions, might make for a brand new (and improved) you, as well.
Start Your Day, Bright and Early
Up with the sun, we’ll waste not a moment. But obviously, caffeine is a must. Find your new favorite flat white down an alley off of Government, at Electric Depot’s newest addition, City Roots Coffee Bar. Matt Saurage’s community-inspired concept, sleek in industrial-chic style, brings luxuries like sparkling lattes and nitro coffees, along with the good old simple joe, but roasted with the sort of care and nuance that tempts you back, hours later, for an afternoon cup.
Practice Your Vocals
Head down to the river, at the end of Florida to be precise, where Po Shu Wang’s sculpture, installed last November, serves—sleek and spaceship-like—as the water’s mouthpiece. Step under the metal canopy, and hear Ol’ Man River sing.
Be More Productive
Aria complete, cross on over Lafayette Street, and walk down to Downtown’s newest verdure space, The Plant Studio @ Outside Stimuli. Offering indoor plants of every leaf and vine, Baton Rouge designer James Curtis promotes productivity in the workplace through biophilia. So pick out the perfect money tree, and get to work.
Eat More Greens
In these chilly willy days, there’s just something about a good soup (we’ve got recipes for two on page 44 of this issue). And with its long-trusted commitment to all things local and fresh, MJ’s soup of the day just can’t do you wrong. In a new location on Government, cozy and full of light, the eatery re-affirms its role as Baton Rouge’s friendly neighborhood vegetable virtuoso.

Perfect Your Aim
Act out your worst fantasies (of a lumberjack career, I mean) at Government Street’s December addition, Civil Axe Throwing, which promises to develop a crop of newly well-trained combatants walking oh-so-confidently among us civilians.
Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
After years of performing and teaching in venues across the city, the Leather Apron Theatre Company has finally settled into a permanent site of silliness in the Ogden Park Shopping Center. They’re jumping right in, launching classes starting January 20. Sign up now, indulging your most unexpected instincts. Anything could happen.
