Artist Talks at the Hilliard

To unpack the artistic, sociological, and philosophical depths of the Hilliard Museum's fall exhibitions, the museum hosts special lectures on Wednesday nights by curators, artists, and other experts. Here are this month's offerings:
• October 12, 6 pm–8 pm: Collection Spotlight Talk with Curator Stacey Wilson— The fashion and cultural history of tignon headwraps are explored in this unique demonstration. This talk closely examines social constructions of beauty as well as the compelling sitter in Adolph Rinck’s 1844 portrait painting "Woman in Tignon (Marie Laveau, Voodoo Queen)." Includes a brief tour of Spotlight on the Collection: Portraiture.
• October 19, 6 pm– 8 pm: Artist Talk with Photographer Jonathan Traviesa —Explore the lens of a New Orleans visual anthropologist whose images have been recognized by the Michael P. Smith award for documentary photography as well as a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Includes a slideshow and brief tour of Traviesa’s work in Face to Face.
• October 26, 6 pm– 8 pm: Artist Talk with Gina Phillips— Learn more about the threaded and sewn processes behind this artist’s crafty installations and portraits as well as hear anecdotes about the individual sitters. Includes a slideshow and brief tour of Phillips’ work in Face to Face.
