Chimpanzee Discovery Days
Chimp Haven 13600 Chimpanzee Place, Keithville, Louisiana 71047
There's a reason this 200-acre forest south of Shreveport is called "Chimp Haven"—the public is rarely allowed to visit this chimpanzee sanctuary, the world's largest, where 250 chimps enjoy retirement from medical research, with more on the way since the National Institution of Health announced plans to phase out chimpanzee research. On two days this fall—October 19 and November 16—the sanctuary will welcome visitors. Watch the chimpanzees play in lush outdoor habitats, discover the natural wonders within, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. The staff will lead educational talks and answer questions. Programs are from 9 am–noon; $10; $5 for children ages 6–12; free for children five and younger. chimphaven.org.
