Get back to nature this fall with a little help from the green thumbs at All You Need (formerly Southbound Gardens). The grassroots education and community center focuses on providing tools and knowledge regrading sustainable living and holistic health. February offerings include:
- February 1, Intro to Permaculture: Bringing together ethical principles of caring for the planet and of caring for people, permaculture is a method of designing living environments in a way that is regenerative. Learn how the principles of permaculture might apply to your life, and a few strategies to put into practice. Located at The Green Project, 2831 Marais. 3 pm–4:30 pm, $20.
- February 2, Urban Water Management: Ward off the persistent threat of New Orleans flooding with DIY backyard solutions including barrels, rain gardens, and French drains. As a bonus, you can reuse that rainwater for irrigation. Located at All You Need, 3700 Toledano. 12–1:30 pm, $20.
- February 8, Build Your Own Composter: Learn about what composting is, about its benefits, and about how to get started. Purchase (optional) materials to build your own simple composters for regular or worm composting, and learn how to build it. Located at The Green Project. 3–5 pm. $20.
- February 9, Raising Backyard Chickens: How to make your own eggs in New Orleans? Learn all about coops and runs, raising chicks, egg production, and more. Located at All You Need. 12–1:30 pm. $20.
- February 15, Seed Saving: Learn how to preserve the seeds from tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, and corn, and take home some tomato seeds while your at it. Located at All You Need. 3–4:30 pm. $20.
- February 16, Edible Gardening: Covering proper irrigation, what to plant, bed prep, and more with seeds, starter plants, soil and other materials available from Laughing Buddha. Laughing Buddha Nursery, 4516 Clearview Parkway. 12–1:30 pm. $20.
- February 16, Natural & DIY Mental Health Strategies: Learn to manage anxiety, depression, relationship conflicts and more through breathwork, dreamwork, herbal remedies, nature, creative work, and community resources with Kezia Vida. Located at All You Need. 12–1:30 pm. $20.
- February 22, Off Grid Solar Basics: Learn DC electricity basics and how to get your own system running through a demo of All You Need's simple off grid solar array for powering lights, pumping water, charging tools, and more. Located at All You Need. 3–4:30 pm. $30.
- February 23, Creating Edible Ecosystems: A veggie-growing part II class featuring principles of permaculture, biology/ecology, and information on how to fertilize and prevent pests without chemicals. Located at Laughing Buddha. 12–1:30 pm. $20.
