Keith Sonnier
SHMOO—O.G.V., 2013. Neon tubing, acrylic, aluminum, electrical wire, and transformer. Courtesy of the artist and Pace Gallery, New York.
A post-minimalist with a flair for the experimental, Keith Sonnier's neon figures (he stands as one of the first artists to work light into sculpture) don't immediately remind a viewer of his Mamou hometown, but Acadiana along with the artist's world travels weaves its way into Sonnier's ever-evolving sculptural language and varied materials, including satin, cheesecloth, and bamboo. He cites, particularly, an interest in the wide array of influences at work in Louisiana and the way its people have moved across the land. Thirty key works, spanning decades, single out this new exhibit at the New Orleans Museum of Art as the first comprehensive museum survey of Sonnier's work. noma.org.
