Children need a creative outlet and a sense of normalcy in an uncertain and rapidly changing environment like the COVID-19 pandemic, and Kids’ Orchestra believes that music is one of the most important outlets available. To keep music alive while students and families are staying at home, KO has developed a new virtual learning program called KO@Home. Available on KO’s website, the program features weekly mini-lessons from KO Teaching Artists on musical topics such as instrument care and how to prepare for a concert, a series of instrument care and handling guides, and a curated list of music resources for families to access together anytime. KO@Home’s weekly mini-lessons can be accessed by families that KO serves, while all other resources are publicly available on the KO@Home webpage. KO@Home will be updated regularly with new family-friendly resources.
“Even though we are facing unexpected challenges during the coronavirus pandemic with our afterschool program suspended until further notice, we are still here and committed to advancing our mission by shifting our approach from afterschool musical training to online music learning," said KO's Executive Director, Jody Hanet.
Families who use KO@Home are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using hashtags #KOatHome and #KOProud or via email to info@kidsorchestra.org. Kids’ Orchestra’s programming is supported by the community, including the Capital Area United Way, Aetna for a Better Louisiana, The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, and the Louisiana Division of theArts, among other partners and supporters.
