Mother Courage and Her Children

For Colored Girls poet-playwright Ntozake Shange—an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's classic war drama Mother Courage and Her Children. Pulled from the archives of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library, Shange's Obie Award-winning play hasn't been published or performed since its 1980 premiere. Spinning the devastating story of Mother Courage into an American perspective, the Brecht's harrowing question lingers, this time closer to home: In the darkest of times, how do we survive without sacrificing our humanity?
