Those who have spent any time in the South—and certainly those of us who have lived here—are very aware of the fact that incredible storytelling exists all around us. PBS has invited many of the South's most beloved storytellers to contribute to its newest three-part miniseries celebrating this legacy of vivid narratives, Southern Storytellers.
Louisiana Public Broadcasting is also hosting a slate of informative, fun, free events showcasing some of Louisiana's favorite storytellers on July 15 in conjunction with the premiere:
Spinning Yarn: The Tradition of Southern Storytelling—Following a half-hour preview of the Southern Storytellers series, acclaimed storytellers from a variety of formats such as Louisiana Poet Laureate Dr. Mona Lisa Saloy, "The Yarnspinner" Angela Davis, and Emmy-winning filmmaker Nathan Willis will share stories of their own at the East Baton Rouge Main Branch Library. 3 pm–5 pm.
Ziggy's Arts Adventures with Storytelling—At the same time as Spinning Yarn and also at the Main Library, kids are invited to join Ziggy (star of LPB's puppet-led digital kids' show, Ziggy's Arts Adventure) and his friends to hear Louisiana stories and songs, before having the chance to contribute to building their own puppet and creating a storyline and play for them. 3 pm–4 pm.
A six-part digital series on PBS's Youtube channel called Southern Sounds will air as a companion to Southern Storyellers, and will feature local storytellers who showcase the ways storytelling intersect with the realms of music, literature, film, and beyond.
Southern Storytellers premieres Tuesdays beginning July 18 on LPB, PBS, and the PBS and LPB Apps. pbs.org.
