Global Wildlife Center’s South American capybaras, Bruno and Tot, are well-loved, friendly and the stars of a brand new encounter at Global Wildlife Center, where guests get to meet and greet them in their habitat. Closely related to the guinea pig (but much bigger), charismatic capybaras are the largest rodent in the world and can weigh up to 150 lbs. Capybaras communicate with surprising and comical whistles, chirps, squeals and grunts, and visitors love to “chat with a capy” during this new, behind-the-scenes experience. In the wild, capybaras live in forest, savannah, and marshland habitats and are well-adapted to life in the water; they use their webbed feet (four toes on each front foot and three on the back) to swim as well as walk. During Global’s new capy encounter, participants choose a palate of paint colors and apply them to a blank canvas before entering the habitat and taking a seat on an “encounter bench.” While learning interesting facts and feeding the capybaras treats of bamboo and vegetables, the pitter patter of capy feet across the canvas create a take-home souvenir to treasure.
