This spring, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library's annual parish-wide reading program One Book One Community (OBOC) puts a story of self-reliance in the wilderness. The goal: to foster real-world dialogue exploring the work's literary themes as well as its relevancy today. Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in a Louisiana Swamp
Throughout March and April, a traveling whooping crane installation from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) will be on display at the Main Library. The exhibit includes a life-size re-creation of the avian, (spoiler alert: these babies can reach up to five feet tall!) along with maps, photos, educational pamphlets, and more.
The unveiling of a new mural designed by New Orleans-based artist Sam Skrimpz is something else to look forward to. Thanks to a partnership between the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, the panorama is a playful tribute to Louisiana's waterways and the ecosystems that depend on them.
On Sunday, March 6, Danny Heitman will give an author's talk on his book A Summer of Birds, sharing insight into John James Audubon’s life and experiences in Louisiana and his impact on the region at 3 pm. On Sunday, March 13, the LDWF will give a presentation entitled Louisiana Brown Pelicans: Past, Present & Future. Author Marybeth Lima will speak about her book, Adventures of a Louisiana Birder: One Year, Two Wings, Three Hundred Species, on Sunday, March 27 at 3 pm.
"Witness to Change: Community Conversations on Coastal Impacts" is a book discussion program being presented by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, Louisiana State University, The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge, and Southern University. These discussions offer participants the opportunity to learn more about issues arising from the complex and changing human relationship to water.
