Louise Peabody knows how relaxing a stay at her Sunset View cottages can be—after all, she lives there too. “I never like to go anywhere anymore,” she said, describing the cozy comfort of her collection of cottages on the Natchez bluffs, overlooking the scenic Mississippi River. Though Sunset View offers many amenities, all designed to deepen the relaxation guests feel, the site’s biggest draw is the view: from the bluffs above, the slow but sure progress of the Mississippi is almost hypnotically calming.
Guests at the cottages can look forward to homemade croissants and breakfast mimosas; for lunch and dinner, you can choose from any of Natchez’s restaurants or self-cater, if the sit-a-spell vibe of the place has you reluctant to leave. Speaking of sitting: if you’re planning to lounge outdoors, screen porches and regular spraying keep mosquitoes at bay; indoors, while some of the pieces in the well-appointed cabins cottages are antiques, “they’re not filled with furniture you can’t sit down on and be comfortable,” so feel free to flop as the spirit moves you.
Visitors to Sunset View are well positioned to explore Natchez, if they’re so inclined, with the picturesque downtown of the well-preserved antebellum river town only a couple of miles away—a short drive, or a pleasant walk on a cool morning. (And with rideshares now available in Natchez, you’re free to walk down in the morning and then hail a car to avoid wilting in the sun on your return journey.) Those who love a stroll will also find ample ambling space near the cottages, with a historical cemetery nearby to capture the imagination.
People come to Sunset View for any number of reasons—to catch up on reading, write a book, get some much-needed rest, or to have a home base from which to explore a charming and historically rich corner of the Lower Mississippi. Whatever brings you there, you’ll find peace and quiet to pursue it, along with a stunning view to inspire or reward yourself as needed. asunsetview.com.
